SPAIDS Picnic

SPAIDS

Invites you to a Picnic and Tree Planting

at

Sydney Park AIDS Memorial Grove

for

World AIDS Day

to be held on

Sunday November 28, 2010

Location… The Sydney Park AIDS Memorial Grove is located on the hill at the western side of the park, near to the Barwon Park Road intersection with Princes Highway.

There’s a carpark right beside it, and it’s a short walk from St Peters train station – just head south from the chimneys, past the playground and it’s on the next hill. We’ll be on the lawns all around it.

This is totally grass roots… It’s a picnic, and everyone is invited to make it into whatever they want it to be.

There will be no fundraising or politics or speeches, which leaves plenty of time to simply enjoy the peaceful and reflective place, take in the spectacular views, be part of a friendly community, visit the ducks by the lakes, wander through the Groves, remember loved ones who’ve gone… and celebrate life with friends and loved ones.

What to bring… Bring your loved ones, bring your memories... bring food and drinks to share, bring a picnic blanket and shade, bring sunscreen, bring your dog/s, bring a kite and games to play… most importantly, bring a friendly attitude.

You may also want to bring something special which reminds you of your loved ones to place at the memorial for the day.

There’s a service station shop across the road to top up with refreshments, and there are toilets in the park nearby, but very little shade.

Contribute… If you’re looking for ways to contribute to the SPAIDS Picnic here are some suggestions. Bring extra blankets, shade structures or umbrellas for protection from sun and rain. Bring plates and cups for sharing food and drinks. Containers for ice. Red Ribbon to tie to trees. Anyone who can stay and help tidy up at the end of the day would also be welcome.

There is no organised entertainment as such, however several local DJs will be playing some ‘atmosphere’.

SPAIDS have been planting trees in Sydney Park as a memorial to people who have died for over 15 years.  In August this year they had their 35th planting, supported by Sydney City Council. It is estimated that about 8000 trees have been planted to date.

The guys who started SPAIDS, Ken Lovett and Mannie De Saxe, are now in their 80’s and live in Melbourne so they won’t be actively involved, but we did ask them if they were ok with us inviting people in their name. They are stoked that some of us youngsters love the park and the memorial, and they have been thoroughly supportive of our effort to bring the memorial to life.

Visit the SPAIDS Website for more information and history of the SPAIDS Memorial Groves. We dearly thank Ken and Mannie for their love, support and inspiration.

Memory Alive in Sydney Park

SX News – November 25, 2009

Since 1994, more than 8,000 trees have been planted in Sydney Park to commemorate those who have been lost to AIDS. With many of trees now fully grown, it has become a space for the community to remember and reflect.

“We just felt it was imperative that there be some sort of permanent memorial to the men who had passed away from this terrible disease,” De Saxe tells SX. “A peaceful place for partners, friends and relatives to remember their loved ones, and a place to remind our community of the battle we’ve gone through, and the battle we still face. But we didn’t want it to be a stark or sad place, we wanted it to be beautiful.”
